My friend Lynda makes these beautiful Sailors' Valentine. They are inspired by the originals made in the 1800's by natives of Barbados and sold to sailors as keepsakes for their wives or girlfriends at home. They are octagonal wooden boxes with mosaics made mostly of shells inside. Lynda adds vintage postcards, illustrations, buttons, and other ephemera to hers.
She sells her work at a few select shows and via her website - be sure to check out the gallery pages for more of her work. If you'd like to purchase one, you can email her for the details. She also does custom pieces. Last year her work was featured in Country Living Magazine, you can read the whole story here.
