Photo Friday

Florence Griswold House

Along the bank of the Lieutenant River

Patrick Dougherty's Stickwork

I'm a little late in entering this weeks Photo Friday theme but it was "Camera Phone". I don't usually take pictures with my phone but I forgot my SLR today. These didn't turn out bad.

I took my mom to the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT for her birthday. After the inheriting this lovely house, Miss Florence opened it to boarders. Henry Ward Ranger saw this as the perfect spot to establish an American school of landscape painting. Shortly after more artist began staying and the Lyme Art Colony began - later becoming the best-known American Impressionist colony.

I'm sorry I couldn't take pictures of the inside but they are available here on their website. The paintings and interior are just wonderful. The house is set up to represent 1910. On the first floor there are these beautifully large doors. Five of them have painted panels. In the dining room 33 artists painted 38 panels on the walls - ranging from the local country side to far way lands to floral studies. Getting an invitation to paint a panel was your seal of membership in the colony.

The main reason I wanted to go was to see Patrick Dougherty's Stickwork instillation. I love his instillations and the fact that they are so interactive. There were 5 or 6 children playing through this piece today - claiming different "rooms" as theirs and hiding in little niches. The structure of this is amazing; it is all bent sapling that are interwoven to create this "castle".

  1. Hey, you made it to my home town! Summer is a good time to visit and the town has much to offer for the art lover.
